Cute Card Thursday - Challenge 57 AND Just Magnolia Fridays Challenge

This weeks challenge over on the "Cute Card Thursday" blog
is called "Getting Edgy"

So I thought I'd play along, and try something that
I had never done before.
I've been planning on buying the proper tool to be
able to do the distressed edges, and a sanding block too
but so far I just haven't actually done that.
If you only knew what I used to improvise in order to get
that sanded or distressed edge on this card. LOL

First I'll show you the card, THEN I'll tell you what I used.
You just won't believe it! LOL

But okay, I just have to tell you about this adorable image.
It's from Bild Malarna in Sweden.
I actually have had this for a while but hadn't inked him up yet.
I have no idea why I hadn't used him yet, he's way too cute,
and LOTS of fun to color.

He actually reminds me of my son when he was 8 years old.
Other than the fact that I gave him brown hair,
if this was my son, he'd be a blondie.
But oh boy do I ever remember the days when Skateboarding
was all my son could or would do and talk about. LOL
If it wasn't skateboarding, it was rollerblading pretending to be a NHL hockey player.
My driveway always looked like either some skate park for skateboarders, or set up with Hockey nets and sticks everywhere. I'm so glad that mess isn't always outside anymore,
But I sort of miss those younger days.

So I thought this would make a perfect boys birthday card.
The main paper that I used is from K & C Company,
which I have had for about a year.
I originally had it to use for decorating pages
when I was working on my sons' scrapbooks,
and that was long before I ever made my first card.
Needless to say, I never used it,
and aren't I lucky now, that I never used it.
I think it goes perfectly with this image.
The darker blue paper is from Stampin' Up,
and the brown is just a scrap of cardstock that I wrinkled up,
then stitched up the side with embroidery thread.

The embellishments are obviously just punched circles,
Also made to look distressed, and 2 Stampin' Up Eyelets,
and a computer generated birthday sentiment.
Can it get any simpler?

And the inside is nothing fancy
but it kind of brings everything together.

Now for the big secret
What I actually used to get that sanded/distressed look.
A battery operated nail thingy, I don't know what it's called,
but sort of a dremel, but it's a small one that came in a nail polish
kit that I got from my mother-in-law.
Hey, no laughing, it works for NUMEROUS things,
so I thought, why not try it for this purpose.
And Look! It worked! LOL

But I do swear that I will buy the approperiate tools for next time.
I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

"Just Magnolia"
The challenge there this week is "Pink & Green"
This is great, I can do that.
Since I was up nice and early this morning
with pains in my shoulder, I did my hot pack treatment
and while I was letting that rest on my shoulder
I decided to look through some papers.
I found the perfect papers for this challenge.
Once again from Stampin' Up's "Tea Party" collection.
I am just loving these new papers of mine.

I decided to keep it a fairly simple card,
since the paper alone is busy enough.
I used the "Picnic Tilda" just because she's so cute
and I thought what a fun thing it would be to have her look as
though she was "Sliding" down the stick of a big lollipop.
Which is from ALOTA Stamps.

Now, with these images, I actually CUT THEM OUT.
I would have done a masking technique,
I don't think there is a way to mask on printed paper
without it showing through.
I just don't think it's possible.
Also I didn't want the bows that were on the lollipop image.
So I did away with those.
The pink dotted paper behind Tilda is actually the reverse side of
the background floral paper.
The center of the flower is also from that very same paper.
The flower is Prima I believe, but not exactly sure of the brand.
Green brads in 2 of the corners are also from Stampin' Up,
and the ribbons are from my stash.
The sentiments both inside and out are from a set of clear stamps that I have absolutely NO IDEA what company made them.
My guess would be that I either bought them through
Oriental Trading, AC Moore, or Or Joanne Fabric & Crafts.
Your guess is as good as mine.
Oh, and the little "candy" that is by the flower,
That was actually a mini christmas ornament from Walmart,
but it was clear & frosted glass I colored it a little with my copics.
Maybe I should have left it clear.
